The incredible fact is that in over five centuries, Château Climens has only changed hands five times. The château remained in the Roborel de Climens family until 1802, when it was purchased by Jean Binaud, a Bordeaux wine merchant. Subsequently, two winemakers owned the vineyard in turn, before it finally passed into the hands of... in 1970.Lucien LurtonNone of its owners became owners by chance; they all knew the unique terroir on which the estate rests.Climens Castleand the enormous potential of this vintage. The full grandeur ofClimens CastleThis stems in particular from the exceptional quality of its soil. As a side note, the name“Climens”would mean “ungrateful land” in French. However, they had not considered the cultivation of vines, capable of transforming neglected soils into veritable gold mines. It was then that the quality of the soil ofBarsac and Sauternes appellationscomes into play. The terroir is indeed composed of red soils scattered with pebbles, a thin layer of iron-rich clayey sand, and a limestone base with fissured asterias fossils. All of this, combined with the slope on which the vineyard rests, provides optimal natural drainage. Moreover, this terroir is ideally suited to theSémillon, which is therefore the only grape variety used within theClimens CastleThis affirms the unique character of the vintage. Combined with the Sauternes microclimate, it allows for the production of noble rot, which, through the action of Botrytis cinerea, will enhance the soul of the wine. Although this noble rot is a boon, offering grapes of exceptional quality, it also demands much more meticulous work from the vineyards.
