the story of Schloss Poujeaux

The history of Château Poujeaux

From the Middle Ages to the present day

The Bordeaux region is seeing the appearance of theChâteau Poujeauxin 1806. However, the seigneury had existed for a long time. One must go back to the Middle Ages to discover that it was independent of the seigneury of the future Château Latour. In the 19th century, the estate acquired true independence and increased its vineyard area. Following some unforeseen circumstances, the Château was acquired in 1920 by the Thiel family. They were committed to developing the Poujeaux name in the Bordeaux wine industry, eventually selling the property toMatthieu Cuvelier.

ThereCuvelier familyleaves his native Nord-Pas-de-Calais to settle inBordeauxand begin winemaking in the 20th century. The latter, owner of, among other properties, Clos Fourtet, will contribute to its revitalization. Accompanied byChristophe Labenneand advised byStéphane DerenoncourtMatthieu Cuvelier ensures the reputation and development of the estate.

The subtleties of the terroir

Located in the Médoc region, inMouliswhose name it bears, theChâteau PoujeauxHis estate now covers 100 hectares. 70 of these are dedicated to viticulture. The terroir consists of a ridge ofGünzian graves. This last factor allows, among other things, a beautiful concentration which ensures great aging potential for the estate's wines. Indeed, the rigor of the vine is guaranteed by this type ofMédoc terroir.

In 1855, the Château's productions were ranked among theExceptional Crus Bourgeois.Nevertheless, the Cabernet Sauvignon (50%), Merlot (40%), Cabernet Franc (5%), and Petit Verdot (5%) grape varieties are grown on a terroir of Premier Grand Cru Classé vineyards. While Cabernet Sauvignon, the king of Médoc grapes, brings tension, Merlot focuses on roundness. The proportion of Merlot in the blends thus offers atypical characteristics to the tasting experience.

The expertise of Château Poujeaux

between tradition and modernism

The strength ofChâteau Poujeauxresides in histeam spiritwhich allows us to ensure both thetraditionin viticulture and themodernityin winemaking. Therefore, the vines are cultivated sustainably. The winemakers practice:

  • striptease
  • bud removal
  • green harvesting
  • To control yields, the grapes' ripeness is assessed visually and with technological assistance, always with quality in mind. The wines are vinified in a way that allows the old vines to fully express their aromas. Grapes from younger vines are vinified together. Aging takes place in French oak barrels for 12 months.

The wines of Château Poujeaux are dense, luscious, profound and elegant, and are the pride of theCuvelier family. They are the perfect representation of their appellation with fruity aromas and melted tannins.
