History of the Estate Marquis d'Angerville Estate

the story of Marquis d'Angerville Estate

          The origins of the estate

          The Marquis d'Angerville

THEMarquis d'Angerville EstateIts origins can be traced back to 1507. A document from that period attests that a royal officer, secretary of accounts, carried out an inventory of the royal domain ofVolnayThe origins are very strong, since the most renowned Volnay wines today are still produced from the same plots. Later, in 1804, the sub-prefect of Autun, Baron du Mesnil, acquired the Clos des Ducs. He subsequently passed it on to his son, Eugène du Mesnil. In turn, Eugène bequeathed his estate to his nephew and godson, Sem, in 1888. The latter did not actually take possession of it until twenty years later, after the phylloxera crisis that devastated the vineyards at the end of the century.

Sem is theMarquis d'AngervilleAfter completing his studies at the School of Fine Arts, he devoted himself to restoring the vineyard, starting in 1906. He was the one who initiated its replanting with thinner vines.Pinot NoirHe undertook this operation with the aim of producing "authentic" wines. In this same spirit, he ended numerous collaborations with Beaune wine merchants whose practices were far from irreproachable at the time. Thus, the Marquis d'Angerville was one of the first to bottle his own production on his estate. He also sold his wines independently. In this way, he developed his own business with the United States. Constantly seeking authenticity and quality, he participated in the creation of the National Institute of Appellations of Origin: the INAO.

          Burgundy and Volnay

          Main producer in Burgundy

Upon Sem d'Angerville's death in 1952, his son Jacques d'Angerville took over the estate. It was he who would build the estate's reputation. Like his father, he sought above all else absolute quality. He would build the estate's reputation and become a true emblem of the village ofVolnayHe also devotes a great deal of time to professional organizations in Burgundy. His work earned him the presidency of theInterprofessional Committee of Burgundy Wineswhich was the predecessor organization of the BIVB. In parallel, it is also the number one advocate for its own wines. Thanks to its activity, it is recognized by the guideBettane & Desseauveas one of the leading Burgundian producers of the twentieth century. A major player in the rise of theBurgundyHe vinified no less than 52 vintages. Jacques d'Angerville dedicated his entire life to Burgundy and to the great wines of Volnay.

Thus, its core values are maintained and the expertise continues to be passed down from generation to generation. The estate team, strengthened by François Duvivier, the new manager, carries out the vineyard work. They know the vineyard and, above all, embrace its philosophy. In 2006, this new team converted the estate intobiodynamic agricultureShe no longer uses any chemicals in order to pass on a perfectly healthy vineyard to future generations.
