the story of Craggy Range - New Zealand

A family estate located on the Te Mata peak

A legacy to pass on to future generations

In 1993,Terry and Mary Peabodytheir goal is to create a legacy to pass on to their descendants. After searching in France and America, the couple set their sights on the magnificent terroirs of theNew ZealandThey saw the full potential of the mountain lands, atHawke's Bay: a remarkable climate and rich agricultural lands.Craggy Range EstateIt emerged from the ground in 1997 on unique plots of land, found with the help of the famous kiwi winegrower,Steve SmithThe main objective ofTerry Peabodyis to become one of the iconic producers of theNew ZealandOver time, the vines have matured, as have the wines and the reputation of the winery. A successful gamble, in 2014 the estate was featured in an American publication.Wine Enthusiast, which describes it as the “New World winery of the year”. A unique terroir, ideal for viticulture

        Vineyard health: a priority

The vineyard is located in the wine district ofGimblett Gravelsin the region ofHawke's BayThe wine district ofGimblett Gravelswas formed during a flood in 1876 when the Ngaruroro River changed its course and left a trail of gravel. This gravel retains the afternoon heat, thus providing perfect ripening for the Syrah, Merlot, and Cabernet vines. The climate and soil diversity of theNew ZealandThe conditions are exceptional; it's the ideal place for growing vines. The climate is temperate and maritime, with volcanic, clay, alluvial, stony, and sandy soils. This exceptional terroir allows for the production of wines with great freshness, purity, and elegance.

Concerned about the environment and in order to preserve their vineyard, thePeabody familyhas embarked on a superb project. This involves planting more than 50,000 native trees and plants in and around their vineyards.Peabodythey also examine the principles of agriculturebiologicalto preserve the land for future generations. Finally, to preserve their rivers, the family invested in water storage to ensure a water supply in winter, when the rivers flow abundantly.

        Winemaking using high-quality equipment

Exceptional wines with a unique style

The estate's wines are produced at two different sites, namely...Gimblett Gravels Wineryand that ofGiants WineryBoth sites consist of individual cellars custom-built to meet the specific needs of each wine style, ensuring optimal conditions during vinification. The majority of the wines fromCraggy Rangeare produced in the cellar ofGimblett GravelsThe latter consists of four separate cellars, each with a specific purpose. It is equipped with top-quality equipment to ensure a gentle process and maintain the highly artisanal approach to winemaking.Giants WineryThere are 3 cellars, one of which holds one of the estate's most special wines, theSophia vintageIt is made in its own circular fermentation cellar, which houses 8,000-liter French oak vats. Each vat is used for fermenting individual plots. The wines deliver a unique and authentic character, marked by their respective, very high-quality terroirs. The team vinifies the wines gently to preserve the quality of the grapes. These wines showcase the terroirs of New Zealand, with highly aromatic and mineral white wines made from Sauvignon Blanc. The red wines, made from Syrah, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon, offer remarkable elegance. The wines possess a great deal of personality and promise memorable tasting experiences.
