The benefits of biodynamic wines
While biodynamic wines offer an added pleasure to the tasting experience, all wine lovers, and especially athletes, also point out their advantage of being particularly easy to digest. It is also proven that well-aged biodynamic wines have higher levels of anthocyanins – high-quality antioxidants. Furthermore, it is not uncommon for the sulfite levels found in biodynamic wines to be lower than normal.
To produce a biodynamic wine
For the winemaker, practicing biodynamics demands considerable effort in the vineyard and a strong commitment. First, they must master organic farming practices, then move to a higher level, understanding the influence of the stars on the plant and developing their own toolkit. This toolkit will, moreover, be made up as often as possible with local solutions: herbal teas, silica horn, cow manure horn, etc.
A solution to global warming
By carefully tending the soil and encouraging deep root systems, the winegrower strengthens the vine's immune defenses against threats such as powdery mildew, downy mildew, heavy rain, hailstorms, drought, heatwaves, and more. For example, a treatment using seaweed allows a vine weakened by a hailstorm to recover three times faster than a neighboring untreated vine.
Demeter, Biodyvin, or without a label
Several labels exist to certify the proper practice of biodynamic farming . These labels are awarded once the conversion has been implemented across the entire estate. In reality, once a decision is made, it is rare to go back. The label is not always adopted by estates, particularly the most prestigious ones, who do not wish to associate or attribute the quality of their wine to anything other than their own brand.
The prerogative of large estates
Each year, the list of announced conversions grows longer and is added to the prestigious houses that claim or do not claim their conversion, but practice biodynamics: the Domaine de la Romanée Conti and the Comte Liger Bel Air in Burgundy, the Roederer champagnes, the Châteaux Pontet-Canet, Palmer, Smith Haut-Lafitte and Ausone in Bordeaux, the M Chapoutier house and the Château de Beaucastel in the Rhône Valley, the Deiss and Zind Humbrecht houses in Alsace, the Huet and Chidaine estates in the Loire.
