The Château Haut-Bages Libéral vineyard covers approximately forty hectares in a single block, planted on the gravelly slopes of the Garonne, typical of Pauillac. These poor, perfectly drained soils promote deep root development and even ripening of the grapes. The estate benefits from a predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon grape variety, which gives its wines structure and longevity. Cultivated according to the principles of certified organic farming, the vineyard is also currently undergoing conversion to biodynamic practices. This virtuous approach allows for the finesse and expression of the typicity of the Médoc terroir.

Owner and history

Since 2000, Château Haut-Bages Libéral has been managed by Claire Villars-Lurton, an emblematic figure of the Médoc wine renaissance. Heir to a prominent Bordeaux winemaking family, she has restored the prestige of this classified growth by instilling a forward-looking vision. Convinced of the importance of sustainable viticulture, she has committed the estate to a profound conversion to organic and biodynamic practices. Her work, at the crossroads of tradition and innovation, is reflected in each vintage, now celebrated for its precision, finesse, and remarkable aging potential.

Vinification and aging

Winemaking at Château Haut-Bages Libéral relies on traditional expertise combined with modern techniques to enhance each vintage. The grapes are hand-harvested and carefully sorted to retain only the finest fruit. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, ensuring optimal extraction of aromas and tannins. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, some of which are new, for a period tailored to refine the structure and develop aromatic complexity. This rigorous approach results in wines that are balanced, elegant, and true to the expression of their terroir.
