Description

Château Margaux 's Pavillon Rouge is one of Bordeaux's most sought-after second-growth labels. From the prestigious Margaux terroir, this red wine expresses the elegance and power characteristic of this exceptional vintage. Located on the left bank of the Gironde estuary, Château Margaux is a First Growth Classified in 1855, an emblem of finesse and tradition. Pavillon Rouge perfectly embodies the estate's style: precision, balance, and remarkable aging potential. It benefits from the same meticulous care as the grand vin, both in the vineyard and the cellar, resulting in a wine of rare depth.

Notes and pairings

Tasting notes

The 2024 Pavillon Rouge boasts a deep, brilliant garnet color. The nose is captivating with intense aromas of black fruit, violet, cedar, and precious woods. On the palate, the attack is ample, the tannins are fine and perfectly integrated, revealing a silky texture and great precision. The finish, persistent and elegant, unfolds notes of sweet spices and graphite, the signature of a Margaux that is both powerful and refined.

Food & wine pairings

This wine will ideally accompany a rack of roast lamb, a matured rib of beef or a tournedos Rossini.

Producer

Producer

The Château Margaux vineyard covers approximately 82 hectares, with plots specifically allocated to the production of Pavillon Rouge. The soil consists of deep gravel, ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon, the estate's flagship grape variety. This well-drained, sunny terroir promotes optimal ripeness and exceptional concentration in the grapes. The vines for this cuvée are on average 25 years old. Vineyard management is based on sustainable viticulture, limiting inputs and respecting biodiversity. This rigorous approach to cultivation guarantees healthy, expressive grapes that truly represent the unique character of Margaux.

Owner and history

Château Margaux has belonged to the Mentzelopoulos family since 1977, who have profoundly transformed the estate by blending tradition and modernity. André Mentzelopoulos initiated the wine's renaissance, which was continued with exacting standards and passion by his daughter Corinne. Since 2020, his daughter Alexandra has embodied the new generation. Managing Director Philippe Bascaules, former right-hand man to Paul Pontallier, manages the property with the expertise of an agronomist and seasoned oenologist. Their commitment is reflected in exemplary vineyard management, a deep respect for the environment, and a continuous drive to elevate each vintage to excellence.

Vinification and aging

At Château Margaux, winemaking is based on rigorous selection plot by plot. Pavillon Rouge is vinified in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, with gentle extractions to preserve the fruit's finesse.
The wine is aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, 30 to 40% of which are new. This method allows the tannic structure to be refined without masking the character of the terroir. Le Pavillon Rouge receives the same meticulous attention as the grand vin, with constant precision at every stage, to offer a harmonious wine that is approachable earlier but possesses genuine aging potential.
