The Moulis-en-Médoc appellation covers approximately 610 hectares between Margaux and Saint-Julien . Merlot , Cabernet Sauvignon , Cabernet Franc , and Petit Verdot are the main grape varieties cultivated there. Established in 1938, it is the oldest AOC in the Médoc . Its clay-limestone soils produce highly aromatic red wines with velvety tannins and excellent aging potential .
Château Chasse Spleen
The Château Chasse-Spleen was named in the 19th century, for the Great Exhibition in London, to distinguish itself from its neighbors. It was said to be so good that it chased away the blues, hence the name! Chasse-Spleen is an open château , a place for sharing. Indeed, it is also a contemporary art center, and it offers three guest rooms and a wine bar .
The grand vin is made from Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon , sometimes complemented by other grape varieties. It has an intense color, and the nose evokes cherry and red berries. The palate is full and silky, with cherry notes returning. It can be aged for about fifteen years.
L' Oratoire de Chasse-Spleen is the second wine . The Château also produces L'Héritage de Chasse-Spleen in AOC Haut-Médoc , Blanc de Chasse-Spleen in Bordeaux Blanc and Château Gressier Grand Poujeaux in Moulis en Médoc.
Château Maucaillou
In 1929, the Dourthe family, already owners of Château Moulin à Vent in Moulis-en-Médoc, acquired Château Maucaillou . They later added the vineyards of Châteaux Felletin and Duplessis-Fabre. The Château produces wines under the Moulis-en-Médoc AOC , as well as the Haut-Médoc AOC. It also offers accommodation, including bed and breakfast.
Château Maucaillou is a grand vin , remarkable for its intense color and its aromas that are both powerful and subtle . It is fruity, balanced, and elegant, with a beautiful length on the palate . It has considerable aging potential , approximately ten years.
N°2 de Maucaillou is the second wine , made from the same vines as its older sibling. It is round and generous, also fruity, with silky tannins .
Château Poujeaux
Previously owned by the Theil family, Château Poujeaux was taken over in 2008 by Philippe and Matthieu Cuvelier, already owners of Clos Fourtet.
Sustainable farming practices and green harvesting are employed here. The meticulous vineyard work continues in the cellars, with vinification in small vats. The three wines are then aged for 12 months in French oak barrels. Château Poujeaux is produced from the four main grape varieties of the appellation. La Salle de Château Poujeaux is the second wine, primarily made from younger vines. Finally, Haut de Poujeaux is made from Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
